Starting today, it’s now possible to see how climate change has affected Alaska in real-time, 360° video.

On Wednesday, the Sierra Club, RYOT and the Environmental Media Association (EMA) launched the first-ever virtual reality climate change PSA. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto, the video (embedded below) flies you to the frontline of America’s global warming crisis, through the heart of a melting glacier and over the broken remnants of this Arctic world.

Jared Leto, Sierra Club, RYOT News & EMA Urge World Leaders to #ActInParis

In less than two months, world leaders will meet in Paris for a momentous Climate Summit to decide on international regulations for greenhouse gas emissions. This video encourages viewers to contact their political representatives and implore them to #ActInParis for lasting change.

“Climate change affects all life on this planet,” said Leto in a press release. “It is literally altering the face of the earth and displacing communities. I hope world leaders recognize that people around the globe want and need them to step up and work together starting at the UN Climate Summit and beyond, to fight the climate crisis. Humanity depends on it.”

At the Paris Climate Summit, known as COP21, 195 nations will be tasked with regulating industrial emissions for the foreseeable future. The goal will be to reduce emissions to the point that they will not force the Earth’s average temperature to increase by two degrees Celsius by the end of this century. It seems like an awfully small number over an awfully long time period, but research shows that such an increase will have devastating and irreversible impacts on the planet.

“The climate negotiations present a unique opportunity to take on the climate crisis and take action for a strong and just clean energy economy,” said Michael Brune, the Sierra Club’s executive director. “As the momentum has continued to accelerate toward this moment, we’ve seen unprecedented climate action from not only the world’s biggest economies but the grassroots activists who are driving the change. Supporters from the entertainment industry like Jared Leto are stepping up to help show that this is not just a political issue, it’s a cultural and humanitarian issue. We need people everywhere around the globe to join the movement and call on their leaders to Act In Paris.”

The interactive PSA is the best, most visible method of showing the world what is at stake. As K. Asher Levin, EMA’s Director of Business Development, explained, “At EMA we are always looking for cutting ways to tell the story of today’s environmental issues to the public. With this incredible VR piece we have found the perfect project to reach people that may not grasp the true impact climate change has had on our glaciers.”

The video is available to view by downloading the RYOT-VR iOS app from the App Store, or on YouTube 360 and Facebook:
