Last week, the 5 Gyres Institute published its ‘All Gyres Paper,’ the first-ever global estimate on the total plastic floating in the world’s oceans. After six years and 50,000 nautical miles of research, 5 Gyres concluded that the ocean contains 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing a cumulative 268,940 tons.

On Sunday, Dr. Marcus Eriksen, co-founder of 5 Gyres and the lead author of the paper, appeared on NBC to explain the health and environmental hazards this plastic soup poses to the marine ecosystem.
