Different Types of Sustainable Energy Sources Uncovered
Energy is an important aspect of human life. Many day-to-day tasks require some type of energy. The United States alone consumes 97 quadrillion Btu, or about 18 percent, of the world’s energy production.
That is a lot of energy that sustainable energy is attempting to compensate for. This is a critically important task because people cannot continue to rely on energy that is not renewable, as this may be causing harm to the earth.
The renewable industry is taking bold steps to ensure that people have plenty of alternatives that should help protect the earth. This should stop people from relying on questionable energy sources.
The following are just a few of those alternatives:
Energy pulled from biomass waste is looking very promising. It seems that 5 percent of the renewable energy used is coming from this source alone.
The sun is also another big power player when it comes to renewable energy. Harnessing the power of the sun is becoming popular in many states, as many companies and homes have adopted solar panels. Still, solar panel energy only accounts for about 3 percent of the entire amount of renewable energy sourced.
Most people remember learning that the earth gets hot when one digs deep into the earth. Geothermal power uses that heat to produce energy. Hot stone, water, and even magma can sometimes be used to produce energy. There are big steps being taken in the industry and many interested parties. Surprisingly, only 2 percent of the renewable energy used comes from this industry, but that is looking to change.
Perhaps one of the most ancient types of power is waterpower, which could be traced back to Ancient Egypt among other cultures. Of course, the way waterpower is harvested now is different and much more sophisticated. The process is called hydropower, and it amounts to a massive 28 percent of the amount of renewable energy provided.
Another older type of energy source is wood, which basically involves the creation of heat. The wood used comes from an easily renewable source, and it is ethically cropped. It accounts for 23 percent of the amount of power supplied through sustainable means.
Biomass biofuel is perhaps one of the most promising kinds of energy available on the earth. It is completely renewable since it is sourced from living and dead organisms that could come from either animal or plant sources. In essence, it is very diverse. One type of biofuel is bioethanol, which is a byproduct of fermentation. This type of energy accounts for 22 percent of the amount supplied.
Another popular source of energy is wind power, which accounts for about 17 percent of energy supplied. It uses wind to produce the power that is needed.
Back in 2013, renewable sources provided about 9.5 percent of all the power used in the United States. But studies have shown that this number should be at least 52 percent by 2040.
Exciting Changes in the Field of Renewable Energy
The desire to improve renewable energy is very real and has helped generate great results around the world.
One breakthrough happened in London from the Department of Life and Sciences at the Imperial College. Here, scientists took harmless bacteria from the human gut to help generate propane. Propane easily escapes from the bacteria in the form of a gas. The gas can be easily turned back into fuel with minimal use of energy.
Another incredible possibility comes from fusion energy. A company called Lockheed Martin is planning to build a fusion reactor that should fit in most large vehicles, like airplanes, submarines, and fighter jets. The reactor will give vehicles unlimited power, which is great to hear and something to look out for.
The artificial leaf, as a source of energy, has also found some footing. Scientists decided to look to nature for inspiration and lessons. They came up with the artificial leaf, which uses photosynthesis to create energy. It was Daniel Nocera from MIT who introduced the idea and is now being followed by the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. The leaf produced hydrogen, methane, and methanol. It is estimated that one leaf, one bottle of water, and sunlight should provide enough energy for one small home.
Power Japan Plus was tired of batteries that could not be recharged more than a few times. And they were tired of batteries that did nothing more than pollute the earth. This was something that Power Japan Plus changed by introducing a ryden double carbon battery. The battery contains no rare metals or heavy metals. It is made from biodegradable ingredients. The battery can charge 20 times faster than other batteries and can be reused thousands of times over.
Holland, back in 2014, opened up a “Blue Energy” facility where the differences between fresh and sea water is exploited to create energy. One side of the water admits negatively charged ions while the other admits the opposite. This constant exchange of ions is what generates “Blue Energy.”
It is true that each of these energy sources have their hurdles to jump over. This is understandable since nothing is perfect, but the advances definitely leave room for imagination and hope. There will be a time when renewable energy is accessible to all, and people will no longer have to worry about harming the earth. These are just the early steps towards that goal and, thankfully, eco-consciousness is a growing trend amongst people.
