Last year the United Kingdom declared the intention to create a fully protected marine reserve out of the waters of the overseas territory of the Pitcairn Islands. The Pitcairns are one of the most remote and smallest countries on earth sitting midway between New Zealand and South America in the middle of the South Pacific. Comprising 52 people (when I visited in 2013) it is the smallest democracy on the planet and voted unanimously in support of the proposed marine protected area. I spoke to some of the residents about their rich environment and had the absolute privilege of exploring some of their beautiful coral reefs. With many endemic species and the clearest recorded sea water on the planet the underwater views here are truly breath taking. Although one of the most difficult places in the world to visit the rewards of making the journey to this oceanic wilderness are evident in this video. A global treasure.
