Baby Elephants Play in the Mud | Via Ewaso Lions

It’s a well-known fact that everything baby elephants do is cute. From chasing away birds to playing with friends, baby elephants seem to be captivated and excited by the world in the same way human children are. The video below, taken by our friends at Ewaso Lions, shows a few baby elephants frolicking in some muddy water after rain.

Why do elephants play in the mud? According to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, “Aside from looking incredibly fun, mud baths serve a critical purpose for elephants. Under the harsh, African sun the heat and UV radiation can be deadly. Romping around in mud not only cools them down, but provides a protective layer to shield their body from the sun’s rays. ”

Ewaso Lions came across this happy sight while looking for lions in Northern Kenya.
